Confidence takes practice.

In the studio, we practise more than movement. We learn to try while someone is watching, accept a correction and keep going after a mistake.

It does not all have to look perfect

A mirror can draw our attention straight to whatever bothers us. A hand is not where we imagined it, our shoulders look different, a step is late. It is easy to forget that this is a moment of learning, rather than a final picture of what we can do.

Instead of asking, ‘How do I look?’, a more useful question is often, ‘What am I trying to learn right now?’ It brings our attention back to the task in front of us.

A mistake is not the whole story

A missed step lasts a moment. Deciding to abandon the rest of the dance because of it makes it last longer. We can try something else: find the next beat and carry on.

That does not mean corrections are unimportant. They are part of the work. But there is a difference between a movement that needs adjusting and deciding that dancing is not for us.

One small piece of evidence at a time

For one person, progress is a new figure. For another, it is dancing without looking at the floor for the first time. For someone else, it is simply turning up despite feeling awkward. These steps do not have to be large to matter.

Dance is not a promise that every insecurity will disappear. It can, however, be a place where we regularly give ourselves permission to try. That is enough to begin with.
